A list of the top 25 blogs

Steph has a link to Time’s list of the best, and worst, blogs.

I assume she means, “Other than Douglas and Main.”

Patsy is looking for good blogs to read. Give your recommendations in her comments please.

Blowing in the wind

Karen has started a site to spread information about, and encourage action to benefit, the Delano neighborhood.

Blog warning

Sarah discusses the big problem with blogs. They are addictive. Especially Self-help gurus that post pithy, perfection attaining posts every five minutes. Sarah does the sane thing.

We can relate. Our name is Douglas & Main and we are blog-aholics. Whether its triplets or mommy bloggers or photos of your mother-in-law’s New Years indescretions; you have us by the eyelids.

But number one in our hearts

Bob Weeks blog, Voice for Liberty in Wichita, is ranked 23rd in a list of the top 100 Libertarian blogs.

He’s having a better year than KU or KSU.

You thought blogging was fun?

It’s not. It’s a requirement.

A milestone of unknown significance

Douglas and Main just added blog number 110 to the list of Wichita-centric posters we monitor.

Someday we should all get together for lunch.

If you know of someone who lives in the Wichita area and blogs, topic is not important, then our administrative staff would enjoy hearing from you. About the blogs. Keep the personal information for your own personal blogging pleasure.

Wichitalk wants you to confess. Just what kind of social networker are you? Slightly obsessed, obsessed or very obsessed?

Follow up on the “map” of Internet Wichita

The Channel 2 Wichita Blog has a couple of other interesting posts that contain information about websites in Wichita. Here is a lit of the top ten sites in Wichita. I am not sure of their metric but I think its site visits.

They also have a list of the top site genres in Wichita. The metric is not provided so its hard to know what is included in each genre or how they are being compared, or why.

Head ’em up

It’s Blog Roundup time once again over at Voice for Liberty in Wichita.

Blogs worth a look

David Kamerer points out three social media/Public Relations blogs he thinks you might enjoy. Even if PR isn’t your thing there are some interesting things about social media (like blogs!).

If you blog or read blogs…

…you are familiar with trolls. A writer for the New York TIme’s Magazine spends some time with a few people who take great pride in being trolls. Except they go way beyond ugly comments and practice internet terrorism and intimidation.

All for our own good of course. Benevolent intentions always allow for doing the vilest things to people. Fraternity hazings? Check. The Crusades? Check. The Soviet Union? Check and double check. Westboro Baptist? Check. Now /b/can stand with these and many other benevolent miscreants.

The blogger’s dilemma

The most difficult part of blogging, other than figuring out what to do with all the money you make from it, is dealing with comments.

If you are serious about thinking out loud on your blog and inviting other people to share in your thought process you will have comments. And sometimes the comments can get nasty. Amazingly, clock-stoppingly, pointedly-personal nasty.

Some bloggers make it clear, “my house my rules,” and cut any comment they don’t like. That works fine to maintain order but can sometimes squash free exchange of ideas. Others let any one swim in their pool, even if they they foul the water. This means that soon the pool is empty. (I could go on and on with this metaphor but, ewwww)

The author of Wichita TV News is trying to get his swimmers to splash but not pee. The intent of his blog is in danger of being drowned out but the free swinging nasty of some of the comments. The anonymity of author and most commentators allows people to speak freely. Some use that freedom to say things that might be difficult to say other wise. Others just use it to display their lack of a diaper.

The power of blogging…

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt is a blogger. Andi Atwater has quotes from Leavett as well as links to the secretary’s belief in the power of blogging.

His blog has comments but don’t expect them to be vetted after hours or on weekends. The conversation is bounded by buisness hours and an official filter.

Here is a blog topic if you are having blogging block: go to Secretary Leavitt’s blog and give your opinion of the kind of conversation that is going on between him and his commenters. A cursory glance says its kinda lame.
